James T:
I'm interested in the shine and protection of polyurethane to my new douglas fur deck. After applying the AC transparent Cedar stain can I apply one or more coats of polyurethane?

No. It is a very bad idea to make a deck look shiny or top coat it with a poly. It will blister, peel, attract mold, and will be a nightmare to fix.

I live in New York City and a two year old deck. My deck is exposed to hot summers and snowy winters. My stairs are exposed to the sun year round but the rest of the deck is under an awning.Would you recommend a semi-transparent or a semi-solid for my deck. I am leaning towards a natural wood look but I want to protect my deck as much as possible. Thank you

Dan Phillips:
I read where it you are not suppose to have wood filler in the deck. Unfortunately, I had already filled some holes with wood filler. Any advice on how to proceed with your stain. Also, I'm not sure where my form is that I had order four sample stains. Is there any way I can still get credit for the 5 gallon container.

Hello, there is no way to darken the filler with the AC stains. You could possibly darken the filler with a similar color in a Minwax stain but not sure if that will blend or not.

Fro sample credit, we need an invoice for the sample order.

Gellian:
Hello
I have a wood deck (pressure treated pine, about 3 years old, unstained/unpainted) and I had an addition installed (new wood, pressure treated pine, almost 2 1/2 month ago). Should I be using the semi-solid or can I use a semi transparent? I noticed the semi-solid indicates that it not be used for 1 year old or less. Thank you

Semi-trans as the semi-solid has to be 1 year. Clean and brighten all the wood for the prep with the Restore a Deck Cleaning Kit.

I have approx 2700 square feet of a 10 year old cedar fence that has been pressure washed and ready to treat.....never been stained or treated before. Can you recommend the number of gallons it should take to cover this area using 2 coats of your semi-transparent stain?

Does the 2700 sq. feet cover both sides? You will need about 20-25 gallons for the two coats and 2700 sq. feet.

had a deck and pergola of redwood built last year. It was sealed with Thompson. With all the rain we had in N.califonia wood turned dark. Pressure washed it with wood cleaner. which is best to seal and stain with uv protection? Does REDWOOD TONE have uv protection?

Redwood tone has UV protection. For even more protection from UV, use the Sierra Redwood.

Ralph:
Hi, I wanted to make sure that the oxford brown stain is appropriate for an IPE deck. Does it need a sealer after the stain?

The Oxford Brown is not for IPE. Use the Amber, Mahogany, or Black Walnut.

You cannot apply a sealer over a deck stain nor is there a need. The AC is a sealer as well.

Hi, can I mix two different colors together to make a new color? I need a warmer (more purple) gray than Driftwood and thought about mixing a gallon of Driftwood with a gallon of Sierra Redwood or Mahogany...

We have cedar siding on our house that is stained with a natural cedar tone semi transparent stain - not yours -but is close in color to your cedar semi. Looking for a semi transparent stain color for our adjacent pt decks that we are cleaning and staining. Looking for a color that will go with cedar semi but not be the same.

Try Rustic Brown or Natural Oak.

I'm a little confused about whether to use your 1 part bleach to 3 parts water formula or the RAD cleaner. After reading some of the questions the readers have asked, I'm inclined to do the RAD cleaner and skip the bleach method. Is this correct analogy?

The RAD prep is better for the wood and is a better prep overall.

I am planning a porch with a sapele deck, treads and railings. I would like to leave it natural color. Which of your products do you recommend?

All of the AC colors are tinted and will enhance the grain based on the color you would like. The Natural is the lightest tint and is similar to a wet look.

The BM Arbocoat does not remove well with a stain stripper so sanding is most likel needed. After the sanding, continue the prep with the Restore A Deck Kit. This should do it for the prep.
Thank you for the response.

I have heard sanding is almost required with the BM stuff. So process should go sand, cleaner, brightener, AC stain....correct?

thanks again
That is correct!
Thanks for the quick responses...one last question though.

I have read belt sanding along the grain of the wood is best to sand the cedar deck...would you go to an 80 grit paper to really get this old BM stain out? Thanks again!

60 to 80 grit.
