We have a Cumaru deck that was originally stained (about 9 years ago) with Penofin Rosewood. (See photos). We want to restain it with AC Mahogany. We have cleaned part of the deck with Oxyclean. We also have some spots from where a bleach cleanser spilled during a house wash. Should we continue with the Oxyclean and then apply the AC stain? Any suggestions about the bleach spots? The deck and railings measure about 630 sf. Do you think two gallons will do the job? Thanks!

I will say I use the mahogany stain on my ipe-and-steel furniture and it works fine. I treat the wood furniture like decking: clean and brighten it with restore-a-deck and then stain.

I waited a year before prep and staining. It doesn’t go gray immediately even if not stained.
Is there anything to do for ipe that seems discolored from moss or mold before staining? This sofa normally has cushions on it and where they had moss is the lighter spots in the bend/seat of the sofa. They’ll be covered by the cushions later so not a big deal, but I thought I’d check. The sofa has just been cleaned and brightened with restore-a-deck but the spots remained.
You should be okay to stain this.
Does the IPE stain work better on drier wood? I’ve cleaned and brightened the wood and the day I stain there will have been no rain for 24 hours and no rain expected for 12 hours after, but it’s still quite damp and humid out, the wood won’t be as dry as it could be. My other option is wait a week and hope for a longer stretch of drier weather, which I will do if it means more lasting results.
You cannot apply the AC to damp wood. You need at least 48 hours after prep, maybe longer.

I have a deck built of Jarrah timbers. It is facing due West and some areas at the front of the deck have lost almost all the previous stain which was a semi-solid. Is the IPE deck stain the best choice for this wood? Or is there something else you would recommend? Also – since there are large areas in the most sun exposed section that are almost bare and other areas that still retain a lot of the previous stain, would you recommend sanding to remove the previous stain ? Yes, remove all the previous coating by stripping and or sanding. Use one of the AC 3 hardwood colors.
This is my mahogany deck after I spent yesterday stripping, power washing, and then brightening. I can definitely tell the old mahogany red stain is gone, at least mostly, but I can’t tell if it’s supposed to look uneven like this. Would the unevenness in color tone show if I start staining, or should I try to strip a second time until I get a uniform natural wood color everywhere?
Does it look even when wet with water? If not, give it another strip and brighten.

Finally have 2 beautiful days to put the stain on the deck. I had poop dropping on the deck so I washed it then dryed it with a hair dryer.Stain was still there so I sanded the spots now it a lighter shade where I sanded compared to the other pieces of wood is it going to effect the stain? Spot sanding can lead to the stain looking blotchy in those areas.

You cannot spot apply brightener to even out the sanding spots. It will stain lighter no matter what in any areas that you power sanded. Only natural weathering for a few months and a full re prep would even out the porosity of the wood so it stains evenly.

One point of clarification: when you say “Do not sand”, is it because it’s unnecessary (to get a smooth wood feel), or is it because sanding can do more damage than good?
Sanding can reduce stain penetration. We do not suggest it unless needed to remove old coatings that cannot be stripped or to help with severely rough/splintered decks. If you sand, use no more than 60-80 grit and use the Brightener after.

Have mahogany decks – front porch, wrap around and the main deck (18 yrs old). I used a semi-solid stain once (bad decision), it peeled and was a PIA to clean off. Prior to and post to the semi-solid stain, I used Cabots Australian Timber Oil. Recent formulation of Cabots oil product is water soluble. Looking for a true oil based product (amber tint) that stands up to use for 3+yrs. 1100 sqft of deck surface – lots of work. Thank you

Why do you have to clean and brighten after sanding? I just spent the entire day sanding our mahogany decking with 40 and 80 grit using a palm sander. Why would I need to clean and brighten? I was planning on staining tomorrow.
You use the prep products to open the pores of the wood after sanding so the stain can absorb in better.
One more question…We used your stain on our back deck this summer and love it. One thing that attracted me to your product is that we won’t have to do all the prep work to recoat when the stain begins to wear off or fade. Now we are doing the front deck which is mahogany. I have a can of TWP which is highly recommended but I see in their instructions that before recoat, we would have to go through this entire prep thing again (sanding, and then applying 1/2 bleach 1/2 water). Why is it that your stain for mahogany will not require all of the prep before re-coating? What makes your product different?
You always have to prep when recoating with a deck cleaner and a wood brightener. You do not need to sand or strip.

One coat of stain. As for color, Amber is the lightest and looks like a wet look, Mahogany is redder, and Black Walnut is much darker brown.

I have a 10 year old mahogany floor on an enclose d screened in porch. I believe it was originally sealed with some type of polyurethane finish since it originally had a shine to it. I sanded the entire floor with 80 grit sand paper and got all the old stains and finish off. It came up beautifully after sanding. I then hand brushed the AC deck stain for hardwoods(mahogany color) on the floor, board by board. The floor is 170 square feet. I used a fraction of the gallon can. Applied it sparingly and let dry for 24 hours. There were a few wet spots after the 24 hours. Wiped all of the wet spots and the entire floor. Waited another 12 hours to dry. I am still getting stain color on the rag even though the floor looks dry. Now what do I do?
Try wiping the excess stain off with mineral spirits and rags. Saturate any oil rags in water and lay flat to dry outside.
Applied mineral spirits and wiped off with rags per your instructions. Needed to do this twice but it solved the problem. The floor (14 ft by 12 ft) is inside a screened porch, mostly covered by an 8ft by 10ft indoor/outdoor carpet from June through September. The remainder of the year the floor is bare through the winter (Philadelphia area). What do you recommend each spring for cleaning and maintenance going forward to avoid sanding? Thank you!

I have a 20 year old Mahogany deck power washed and sanded (11×35), and a new adjacent Mahogany deck (22×16), pictures attached. How would you recommend matching the color of the 2. In looking at the pictures and discussions here, Amber is a frequently recommended color. How much stain would you recommend purchasing, assuming 1 coat? We have a Mahogany deck that is about a year old. It Hasn’t yet been treated with anything. I am planning to purchase your deck stain and restore kit for prep. My question is….the deck currently is horrible with splinters! You can’t sit on a step without slivers ending up in your pants never mind walking across it! Is this normal for mahogany? Does staining help to fix this or should the deck be sanded down?

I have a mahogany front door that I have stripped, sanded and have it prepared to stain. I would like to stay away from any type of finish that builds up a coating on the surface of the wood. Stripping and removing the original finish was quite the chore that I do not ever want to have to do again. Would your stain be suitable for using on my door? Hello, I have quite a bit of leftover AC stain from my redwood deck. It is Natural Oak, semi transparent. I was hoping to use it on my IPE wood dock. I am at high altitude (7500 ft) in VERY dry New Mexico. I have already cleaned and brightened with RAD products. What will be the problem with using the Oak stain over the specialized IPE stain you list. I am a bit frustrated as on your site says “no new orders” I am worried about waiting too long to stain the dock.

Natural Oak is not designed for IPE. While it will work. It will fade a little faster than the 3 IPE stain colors.
Hi – just doing the math. Our deck is approximately 575 sq feet. (including steps). It’s two tiers top – 12’4″ x 18’4″ bottom – 14’2″ x 23’5″. Your description reads the hardwood stain covers 300+ sq feet per gallon, so 2 gallons should be plenty. But, when we put the numbers in the calculator on your site it’s saying we need 12 gallons! I feel like that can’t be right. Can you please clarify? Thanks!
You have to add in all the ratings and stairs, not just the floor sq footage. What is the total sq footage with all added?
Railings are PVC and I included the stairs in the overall 575 sq ft. There are 3 that are 7’9″x2′ and 3 more that are 1’x3′. Definitely not nearly enough to put us up to 12 gallons! I just want to make sure I buy enough without overbuying. Thanks.
Your floors alone added up to 565 for me. Add in the stairs and you are at 600ish. Do you have outside edges of the floors that are wood? If so you have to add that as well.
What type of wood is this? The coverage of 300 per gallon is for a hardwood deck only and 1 coat. If you do not have a hardwood deck then you will need much more and you will need two coats.
